Fifty Shades

I don't own a Kindle and, as a library assistant, will defend to the death books made out of real paper, but I did download the Kindle app so I could read eBooks by blog chums Fran and Frances.

So if I happened to buy the eBook Fifty Shades of Grey just to see what the fuss is about, at least no-one will know! Of course it's not great - it needed an editor, if only to cut out the numerous times our heroine says 'Holy crap!' - but I'll plow on for the sake of  'research' and of course I can't 'flog it' later on Amazon - a downside of Kindle I hadn't thought of!

And don't say I could have just borrowed it from the library... the waiting list is lengthier than Mr Grey's schlong and every day more furtive-looking women come in and whisper: 'I don't suppose you have...?'

If you want a flavour of the book before you 'submit' to reading it, there's a hilarious critique of the book on Cassandra Parkin's blog and I have a related idea of my own, which I'm sure you're 'gagging' to hear about... but I'm going to make you wait.

p.s. I'm about a third of the way through now, so I may be a little 'tied up' for the next few days, and have to keep you in suspense...

  2. Second attempt... My agent says I can't i can't ignore the success of 50 Shades. Trouble is, I simply couldn't write that kind of book. I haven't read it, but I think I would bore myself and any readers silly if I tried to write it.

    Love the hat!

    1. I'm actually secretly enjoying it as a light read... reminds me of Mills & Boons I read in my teens for sheer escapism. And some of it is unintentionally hilarious!

  3. A recent visitor here arrived with that book as her holiday read. I flicked through it and decided life was far too short - especially when I looked at my shelves groaning with real books waiting to be read.

    1. I know, I know... but I don't like reading good books in my lunch break at work, or when I'm tired because I like to concentrate, so it's fine for those occasions

  4. That picture is FABulous! I want one. How did you do it?
Let me know what you think of the book when you have moved seamlessly from erotic fiction in 'Fifty Shades' to the teacher getting a Wine Gum stuck to her foot during invigilation in 'Being Miss'.

    1. I feel guilty now because I haven't started yours yet! 8-/

I did the pic on my iPad (which I am so overwhelmed with I can't put into words and hence haven't blogged about... yet) using a free app called Skitch.

    2. That's the outcome I'm hoping for. If I find you've blocked me from your Facebook, blog, etc etc, I'll know you hated it. And why does everyone except me have an iPad? By 'overwhelmed' do you mean, you're crying with joy, or as in 'haven't got a clue how to work it all'. They do amazing things, that's all I can say. Making you grey like that when I'm sure you're really a stunning blonde.

  6. Haha! So fun to look through the books on the Costco tables and see women peruse the book from a few stacks away or gingerly pick it up. They must sneak it in their carts somewhere because the stack is always going down.

I don't think I could get past the poor writing - or torture. There is a great deal of "excellent" erotica out there. I hope some of that gets on good lists sometime soon.

I read Fran's book, too. Loved it.

    1. Haven't got to torture yet... unless you mean the reading of it! Although the writing isn't quite as poor as I expected and is more bearable (for me) than Dan Brown!

  9. Been meaning to tell you that I also did a "spoof" on "50 Shades of Grey." (Quite sometime ago; actually). Only as a gardener, I called mine "50+ Shades of Green" @ https://vimeo.com/44426943
